Static or Distortion

If you are hearing static or distortion through your earbuds or headphones, try the following steps. These issues are often caused by environmental interference or device settings and can frequently be resolved with a few adjustments:

  • Check for nearby electronic devices that may cause wireless interference.
Some electronics that operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency can interfere with Bluetooth signals and introduce static or distortion. Common sources include:

    • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi routers
    • Cordless phones
    • Wireless speaker adapters
    • Home security motion sensors
    • Fluorescent lighting
    • Microwave ovens
    • Wireless mice and keyboards

Try disconnecting or turning off these devices one at a time and check if the issue improves. If so, consider relocating your earbuds or the source of the interference to improve performance.

  • Check and adjust audio settings on your connected device.
Many smartphones, tablets, and computers have built-in audio enhancements like Bass Boost, Treble, or Loudness settings. These can sometimes conflict with your earbuds’ audio processing.
Go to your device’s sound settings and either turn off these features or set them to a neutral position. This allows your earbuds to apply their own optimized sound profile without interference.

  • Be sure the bass and treble adjustments in the Bose app are not set too high or too low for your preferences. For more info, see Using the Equalizer settings.
If needed, you can make small, gradual adjustments afterward to fine-tune your audio experience.

Move away from any hard surfaces.

Reflected sound (caused by using the headset close to a hard surface – like a wall) will negatively affect noise cancellation.

Try a different noise cancelling level.

You can adjust the noise cancellation levels in the Bose app from 0 (least cancelling) to 10 (most cancelling). Try different levels and see if the noise cancellation is improved

Check for and install any available product updates.

On a computer, visit btu.bose.com and follow the instructions to ensure your product has the latest features and enhancements. See Checking the software or firmware version and Updating the software or firmware of your product.

Be sure the earcups are tightly seated against the head.

Glasses, earrings and hats may prevent the headphone cushions from forming a tight seal around the ear. Remove any of these items and retest the noise cancelling feature.

Be sure the cushions are securely attached to the earcup.

If the ear cushion is not affixed to the ear cup properly, the noise reduction or sound quality may be affected. For more information, see Replacing the ear cushions.

Reboot your headphones.

This reset will not erase your product settings.
  1. If the USB charging cable or audio cable is connected to your headphones, disconnect it.
  2. Connect a USB charging cable and charger to a power outlet. You can also connect the USB cable to a USB port on a computer that is powered on.
Note: Do not connect your headphones to the USB cable yet.
  3. On your headphones, press and hold the Power/Bluetooth® button.
  4. While continuing to hold the button, connect the USB cable to the left earcup. The Power light on your headphones will quickly blink twice.
  5. Once connected, wait two seconds and then release the Power/Bluetooth button.
Tip: If your headphones don't respond after this, reset them a second time.
